One day in Luxor gives you time for a rewarding visit, but it helps to choose your priorities before filling the itinerary. You could combine royal tombs on the West Bank with Karnak Temple on the East Bank, or spend your time exploring just one side of the Nile.

Start with the places you most want to see

Luxor’s main sights fall into two useful groups. The West Bank includes the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon. On the East Bank, Karnak and Luxor Temple make a natural pairing.

If the royal tombs and Karnak are your main reasons for visiting Luxor, build the day around them.

A combined route can take you to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon before continuing to Karnak. It gives you a varied introduction: decorated burial chambers, a temple set against the cliffs, and the scale of Karnak’s monumental architecture.
